Wellington-Kapoor Residence

The Wellington-Kapoor project was the term project from my second-year studio class. We were tasked with helping a couple in their late fifties, Rick and Sanjay, renovate their home to accommodate them, Rick’s sister Rebecca and her three-month-old baby, Joni. Rick and Rebecca’s uncle left them his home on the University Endowment Lands in Vancouver, and wanted to give it a refresh. As Rick and Sanjay neared retirement, they wanted a slower pace of life and a space designed to reflect that. They wanted a calm, welcoming space for Rebecca and little Joni.

The Wellington-Kapoor family requested that the new house layout should take advantage of the north view of the water and the north shore mountains, along with the west view of water and eastern view looking back at the city scape of Vancouver. Rick and Sanjay were avid travelers, and had collected many treasures along their way. They had many pieces of contemporary African art and sculptures, as well as furniture that they asked to have incorporated into the design of their renovation.

My goal for design was to use as many natural materials and colours are possible, while paying close attention to durability. I aimed to reflect the surrounding forest and nature that the family loved and valued so highly.
